Elm (American) Hardwood Lumber
All lumber prices shown are per board foot, unless otherwise noted.
Our American elm stock is supplied as S3S lumber
Color: Heartwood is light to medium reddish brown. Paler sapwood is usually well defined.
Grain: Grain is interlocked (making it very resistant to splitting). With a somewhat coarse, uneven texture.
Workability: Can be a challenge to work because of interlocked grain, especially on quartersawn surfaces. Planing can cause tearout and/or fuzzy surfaces. Poor dimensional stability. Glues, stains, and finishes well. Responds well to steam bending, and holds nails and screws well.
Physical Properties: Elm is moderately heavy, hard and stiff with excellent bending and shock resistance. It is difficult to split because of its interlocked grain.
